This rapid fire presentation will quickly present examples of how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is reaching out to high school, college and graduate students using innovative tools. For example, the NIH Clinical Center used Google Groups to help medical and dental students network with each other before and after a large conference hosted by the NIH. We also used the site as a document sharing and discussion board tool. The purpose was not only to get them connected to the NIH, but also to each other as future colleagues. As another example, the National Institute on Drug Abuse at NIH created a software program that allows for live chat between expert addiction scientists on one end and high school students on the other. During the annual Drug Facts Chat Day, students ask questions of the experts in real time, thereby breaking down the taboo of talking about drugs and allowing students to hear scientifically accurate information.
This presentation at the Gov 2.0 Expo will explain the genesis of these ideas, how they helped, what the challenges were, and plans for expansion on Gov 2.0 activities. NIH is one of the most open-minded agencies when it comes to Gov 2.0—we are passionate about getting heath and medical knowledge to the public in an engaging way.
